The Chinese Shar-Pei Club of America, Inc. formed the Chinese Shar-Pei Charitable Trust as a 501-3c not-for-profit charitable organization in 1995 for the express purpose of funding research into the health problems of the Chinese Shar-Pei breed. Shortly after that the Charitable Trust joined with the AKC Canine Health Foundation. These two groups work together with the Charitable Trust funding Shar-Pei health related projects supported by the AKC Canine Health Foundation and also funding independent research into health problems common in Shar-Pei. The AKC/CHF is the administrative arm of our grant management and contributes as much as 50% of the grant money to many projects.  The main focus has been the development of a blood test to identify carriers of the gene for Familial Shar-Pei Fever (FSF) and Amyloidosis. Research has been disappointing, but is ongoing with a new grant approved to fund a study at Colorado State University and the National Institutes of Health. New projects will be directed towards mast cell cancer and other diseases that afflict Shar-Pei.
